This piece began on the southeastern coast of Iceland, on a volcanic black sand beach strewn with melting chunks of glacier.
The original footage is slowed far past an “acceptable” frame rate. At such a slow speed, the algorithms that interpolate between frames begin to reveal themselves, causing a rhythmic judder between moments of smooth motion as they guess at what’s happening in the empty space between two images.
The soundtrack is generated in part by my own algorithm, a sonification of visual movement within that artificial space.
