Oh, Man

Vine charcoal, Wildfire charcoal, graphite, ink on paper

Originally appearing in a dream, these naked, headless men have made their way into several of my recent works on paper. They’ve come to represent a particularly male form of hubris, a selfishness concerned only with forward motion, thoughtless accumulation, the “productivity mindset,” and a myopic, Darwinian view of individualist survival. I’ve situated them here in a stormy, post-apocalyptic landscape, with traces of an urban environment on the distant horizon. Circular forms in the atmosphere reference heavenly bodies, classical geometry, and a problematic adoration of “nature” as a virginal other, instead of the root source of everything that makes up our bodies, our minds, our souls, and everything we touch. These circular lenses or viewports reveal nuance and complexity in a world that desires simple answers, clear categorization, and “actionable” information.
